The Bayern camp was naturally delighted after a 3-2 victory over MSV Duisburg in the final away match of term.

Reaction to MSV Duisburg v Bayern:

Ottmar Hitzfeld: ”The game began extremely well for us. I’m sure most people found it unbelievable that we were 3-0 up after only 20 minutes, me included. Duisburg never came close to their potential in the first half, but they were very good after half-time. It was important we continued playing football right to the end. We have a responsibility to the other teams in the league. I’m sorry Duisburg and their amazing fans have gone down.“

Marcell Jansen: ”An early goal away from home is always good news. Duisburg knew they had to win at all costs, but we seized the attacking initiative and quickly added to our total. It was certainly a great game for the fans.“

But credit to us, we played as if there was something riding on the match. We’re trying to be fair to all the other teams. We profited from that once ourselves when Unterhaching beat Leverkusen.“

Rudi Bommer (MSV coach): ”Obviously we’re devastated and we’ll need time to get over it. We were confident beforehand but it was always going to be difficult after we conceded the first goal, because we made too many errors. We were unsettled by going three down so early. At half-time, I appealed to the players’ sense of honour and it appeared to work, because we played well in the second half. But at the end of the day our fate wasn’t decided here, there are a lot of other factors which have led to us being relegated.“

Tom Starke (MSV keeper): ”Conceding the early goal took the wind out of our sails. We’ve not managed to come from behind very often this season. We couldn’t find a way to get at them and there were signs of heads going down. We came out after half-time treating it as if it was still 0-0, but it was too late. At least the second half was a decent send-off to our fans.“
